Getting a quality night’s sleep is essential for all aspects of your health. Not only is it critical for your body, it also affects your daily energy, nutrition choices, ability to handle stress, and impacts productivity.
Did you know sleep deprivation affects many of your organs as well? In the brain, it causes cognitive impairment, memory lapses, impaired judgement, severe yawning, and can cause symptoms similar to ADHD. The heart is impacted with irregular heart rate and risk of heart disease. Lack of quality sleep can also impact the lymph nodes, which can lead to poor immune system function (increased illness).
Here are 10 tips to help you sleep better, at home and while on the road for work:
Tip #1: Practice regular sleep rhythms – go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
Tip #2: Make your bedroom a media-free zone. Consider a “Power-Down Hour” from all media.
Tip #3: Make your bedroom more like a spa and less like a den. (eliminated clutter and distraction)
Tip #4: Create a bedroom environment that’s dark, quiet and cool. Especially in hotels, consider using eye mask and white-noise machine to help mute other noises. Use blackout curtains to block all light.
Tip #5: Avoid caffeine and alcohol after 6 pm
Tip #6: Get 20 minutes of sunlight each day
Tip #7: Eat your last meal at least 2 hours before bed
Tip #8: Brain dump worries: harvest gratitude – take 5 mins to release everything from your brain to release tension and stress from the day
Tip #9: Take a hot Epsom salt or aromatherapy bath – raising body temp helps induce sleep. Epsom salts release tension in muscles.
Tip #10: Warm your bed with hot-water bottle – great for upset stomach or menstrual cramps.
